Overview of Algarve apartment : 4b Waterside Village, Praia Da Luz, Western Algarve

Waterside 4B is in one of the most attractive locations in Praia da Luz. The fine sandy beach that is ideal for children of all ages is so near that you can wear your beach clothes there and back, or nip home for a drink or snack during the day.
4B is in a two-storey block fronted by gardens containing Roman ruins. Inside it is more like a cosy second home than an impersonal holiday apartment.
Within a few minutes walk are the Bus Stop, two very good supermarkets and some of the best restaurants. And yet it is very quiet at night.
The Buses (or Taxis if you prefer) run into Lagos from the nearby 'church square'. In our opinion Lagos is by far the nicest town in the Algarve.

Living Accommodation

Except for two steps by the gate, the apartment is on one level. This makes it particularly suitable for people who need to avoid stairs.
The living room adjoins the garden, with a traditional heavy wooden front door and a sliding French window. There are two very comfortable chairs (see the photos), a single sofa bed, a well-filled bookcase and a dining table that can seat four.
The TV can receive UK programmes via satellite, and the screen can be used to show videos from a DVD player.
A nice feature is that there is an arched opening between the kitchen and the living room so that the cook can chat with guests while serving the meal over a large marble counter top underneath the arch.
In good weather the living space extends into the garden, where there is room for a teak table and chairs, and of course a sun-umbrella. In all there are six 'dining' chairs for socialising and two reclining chairs for a snooze in the sun.
The kitchen still has its original Portuguese tiles and is well equipped if you wish to cook. There is a gas cooker, microwave oven, fridge and an array of cooking utensils, knives and cutlery.
There is a washing machine, together with drying racks, iron and ironing board.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The bedroom is at the back of the apartment, that is the north side of the block. There is no traffic noise and lots of shade. A French window with a roller blind and curtains faces a small courtyard that is below ground level. This gives a great sense of privacy.
There is ample storage in drawers, on shelves and on hanging rails in two large built-in wardrobes.

For a family of three there is a full length single sofa-bed in the living room that would suit a child, but though some clients have used this for a third adult we do not encourage this. There is a small charge to cover laundry if the bed is used.

The good sized bathroom contains a proper bath with a shower incorporated (see the photos), a WC and bidet and a large sink.

Outside

The garden (actually more like a patio) faces south and has a nice view of the famous cliffs and 'Black Rock'.
There is room for dining or sunbathing, or just sitting under a large umbrella with a book and your favourite refreshment.
We have planted borders with honeysuckle and other leafy plants to give a pleasant sense of enclosure and enhance the view from the living room.
A small but important detail - there is a rack for drying washing or wet bathing suits

Accessibility

There are two steps at the entrance but otherwise the apartment is on one level. Many of our guests have chosen us because it is very suitable for those who have difficulty with stairs.
From outside the gate you can get to the buses, supermarkets, cafés, chemists or the sea front without climbing steep slopes

Services

Our Agents are nearby in Luz, and visit all guests, usually the day after they have arrived, to check that all is well.
There is a maid service once a week: the price includes bed linen and towels for bathroom and kitchen. There is normally no charge for gas or electricity but we may ask for a contribution for long winter lets (this would be agreed beforehand).
The garden is maintained by our Agent; the attractive gardens in front of the block are looked after by the Ocean Club.

Restrictions

We do not allow smoking inside.
Advisory: For many years we rescued abandoned cats (and had them neutered to avoid an explosion of their population). Consequently our garden was used by friendly cats as a refuge from cars and dogs. Many guests enjoyed their company and found that they added to the pleasure of their holiday.
The last of our 'rescued' cats has now gone, and we no longer arrange for a daily food supply, but you could be visited by cats who still hope to find full food bowls.

The Area: Praia Da Luz, Western Algarve

We believe that Praia da Luz is one of the most attractive locations in the Algarve. Though there has been much development in recent years this is not as high-rise or intrusive as in many places.
It is a good base for exploring by road or on foot. Getting to and from Luz is easy: Shuttle buses from Faro airport set down and pick up from the square near the Church.
During your stay you can also catch a bus or a taxi (or hire a car) to visit nearby Lagos or to explore other Algarve villages, towns and visitor attractions. The nearest very large town is Portimão, but the lovely town of Lagos is only a short bus ride or car drive away. It is busy but has a charm of its own: we have visited most towns in the Algarve and still believe that Lagos is the most delightful.
If you like walking there are cliff paths in both directions. The path to the west leads to the fishing village of Burgau; most of the way is easy going but there are some slopes to climb and descend.
The eastern path is more of a challenge because you must first climb to 'Atelier' on the top of the cliffs before reaching a less demanding descent to the small bay of Porto da Mos and thence on to Lagos.
But you need not be so adventurous. The beach is wonderful, perhaps at its best early in the morning when the sun is just above the horizon. On the promenade and near the 'Forteleza' there is such a wide variety of restaurants and cafés that you are certain to find one that suits you. And all the time you would be not much more than a few minutes walk from our apartment.

Prices are all-inclusive with nothing more to pay unless you negotiate a long winter stay or (for example) you wish to hire a cot.
The best changeover day is Thursday because this enables our agent to drop in on the Friday to check that everything is satisfactory. But we are flexible and will accommodate your dates unless there is a good reason why we cannot. We will explain if this is the case.
But please avoid leaving on Sundays because our wonderful maid Carla cannot travel to Luz on Sundays to prepare our apartment for an arrival on Monday. Because of this Sunday departures are normally treated as though the last night was Sunday night. But we will make this clear before you book, and will waive this condition if, for example, there is already a guest booked to arrive on the Tuesday.

Stunning weather for October, and the sea was just right for deliciously cool refreshing dips. Apt 4B could not be better placed, the walk to the beach: 4 mins, walk to the Supermarkets 2 mins, walk up to bus stop 1 min! We loved being able to nip back to 4B from the beach for lunch and a refreshing drink then back down for a late evening swim. I enjoyed my morning cuppa on the terrace with a book, watching the sun rise from behind Black rock. The setting was perfect and the little kitchen has everything we needed to self-cater. Praia also has a great choice of restaurants; we loved the pizzas at Allora, and the homemade ice-cream stall opposite the Church is a must! Thank you for a really wonderful holiday.
